The NHS faces mounting challenges from rising patient demand, workforce shortages, and financial constraints, with an annual productivity ambition now set for every organisation over the next three years. NHS organisations are leading the way by implementing digital innovations and automation to unlock productivity and efficiency, helping the system meet these challenges. By introducing technologies such as real-time analytics, AI-driven scheduling tools, robotic process automation and automated workflows, NHS teams have streamlined their operations, reduced waiting times, and optimised resource management, ultimately delivering better patient outcomes.

Judges will be looking for projects that demonstrate tangible improvements, such as increased operational efficiency, better patient flow, and effective resource management, with a particular interest in initiatives which have used automation to remove repetitive manual tasks and release time for staff. The best examples will not only showcase measurable results but also demonstrate scalability, sustainability, and collaboration across NHS systems to drive long term efficiency.

Eligibility

  • All NHS organisations (including providers, partnerships and systems), General Practice and primary care organisations.
  • Evidence must relate to a project, ongoing or completed within the 2 years up until the award entry deadline.

Ambition

The challenge and context within which your project, person or organisation is set alongside your goals and targets whether quantitative or qualitative, and how this aligns with national priorities.

  • Outline the challenge your project was designed to address, including the specific pressures faced by your organisation (e.g. patient demand, workforce shortages, financial constraints).
  • Define the strategic goals of the project and how digital tools and automation were identified as the key to unlocking productivity and efficiency, and what made your approach new or distinct from existing practice.
  • Explain the expected outcomes and key metrics used to measure success (e.g. reduced wait times, improved patient flow, staff time released or productivity gains), and how these align with national productivity ambitions.

Collaboration

The stakeholders' involvement in co-designing and delivering the project. How have patients, staff at all levels, communities and other parties worked together to realise the outcomes?

  • Describe the collaboration between NHS staff and patients in the development and deployment of the solution.
  • Provide testimonials or examples of how stakeholders across different levels of the organisation were engaged in the process, including those whose roles were most affected.
  • Discuss how staff, patients, and partners have adopted and benefited from the digital solution in day-to-day operations.

Impact

The measurable benefits delivered to patients, staff, your organisation or the wider system. Provide data and evidence showing improvements to outcomes, quality, access, equity or efficiency.

  • Demonstrate measurable improvements in operational efficiency, patient outcomes, or resource management, supported by clear before-and-after data or case studies.
  • Share how the project improved the overall capacity of the organisation, including any financial savings or time saved for staff, and provide evidence of how the digital solution was implemented without causing significant disruption to existing services.
  • Provide evidence of how the project has improved staff satisfaction, reduced administrative burdens, and optimised workflows.

Scale

How your work has been shared, adopted or replicated beyond your immediate team or organisation. This includes dissemination through publications, presentations, toolkits, partnerships or inspiring similar initiatives elsewhere.

  • Explain how the project's successes and learnings have been shared across the organisation and beyond, including through publications, presentations, toolkits or partnerships.
  • Provide evidence of replication or adoption beyond your immediate team or organisational boundaries.
  • Discuss the potential for scaling the project across other NHS systems or settings and provide evidence of successful replication where possible.

Sustainability

The potential for the project/work to continue and create lasting impact. Evidence of how it can be sustained or built upon.

  • Discuss how the digital solution aligned with the broader mission of your organisation and contributed to long-term productivity gains.
  • Explain how the solution is being embedded into business as usual, and what resource or funding is in place to sustain it.
  • Describe your plans for sustaining and building on this work, including extending automation into further processes or services.
