Digital transformation in the NHS is delivered by people. Behind every successful programme are individuals whose vision, persistence and leadership have shaped how technology, data and new ways of working improve care, often over many years and across multiple organisations, roles and reforms.

This award recognises an individual who has made an outstanding and sustained contribution to digital transformation across the NHS. Unlike our project-based categories, judges are looking for the story of a career of impact: someone who has championed the digital agenda, inspired and developed the leaders of tomorrow, delivered change that has endured beyond their own tenure, and influenced practice well beyond their own organisation. Nominees may come from any professional background, digital, clinical, operational or academic, and from any part of the system.

Nominations will be strongest where the claims made are supported by independent evidence and endorsements from colleagues, partners and the wider system. The winner will exemplify how thoughtful, inclusive leadership can pave the way for transformative change in healthcare delivery, leaving the NHS more digitally capable than they found it.

Eligibility

  • Nominations (including self-nominations) can be made for individuals working in any NHS organisation or setting.
  • Evidence may relate to a sustained contribution over the course of the nominee's career, with particular focus on impact within the NHS.

Ambition

The challenge and context within which your project, person or organisation is set alongside your goals and targets whether quantitative or qualitative, and how this aligns with national priorities.

  • Describe the vision the nominee has created and championed for digital transformation across their team, organisation or the wider NHS, and how it links to national digital ambitions.
  • Outline the scale of the challenges the nominee has taken on over their career, and what has made their contribution distinct.
  • Discuss how the nominee has engaged colleagues, stakeholders and patients in developing their vision to ensure inclusivity and deliver user-centric services.

Collaboration

The stakeholders' involvement in co-designing and delivering the project. How have patients, staff at all levels, communities and other parties worked together to realise the outcomes?

  • Provide testimonial and/or supporting evidence of how the nominee has engaged and inspired differing teams, professions and organisations with the digital agenda.
  • Share how the nominee has included and involved patients, families and/or communities in digital initiatives and planning.
  • Judges are looking for an individual who has created an inclusive culture, in which staff feel able to question the status quo, raise concerns and make suggestions for improvement.

Impact

The measurable benefits delivered to patients, staff, your organisation or the wider system. Provide data and evidence showing improvements to outcomes, quality, access, equity or efficiency.

  • Evidence how the performance of teams, organisations or systems has improved as a result of the nominee's contribution, using both qualitative and/or quantitative evidence with clear before-and-after examples.
  • Provide examples of specific digital initiatives, products or programmes the nominee has led or enabled, and show how they have positively impacted patients and staff.
  • Share any financial or wider system benefits the nominee's work has delivered.

Scale

How your work has been shared, adopted or replicated beyond your immediate team or organisation. This includes dissemination through publications, presentations, toolkits, partnerships or inspiring similar initiatives elsewhere.

  • Describe how the nominee's work, ideas or leadership have spread beyond their own organisation - through national programmes, networks, publications, mentoring or the replication of their initiatives elsewhere.
  • Provide evidence of how the nominee has influenced the wider digital profession or national policy and practice.
  • Share testimonials from across the system that demonstrate the breadth of the nominee's influence.

Sustainability

The potential for the project/work to continue and create lasting impact. Evidence of how it can be sustained or built upon.

  • Describe how the nominee has developed people, teams and capability that will endure beyond their direct involvement - including mentoring, talent development and creating digital champions.
  • Evidence how the changes the nominee has driven have been embedded and sustained over time.
  • Explain the lasting legacy of the nominee's contribution to NHS digital transformation.
