Supporting the workforce has never been more critical, particularly due to ongoing workforce shortages and the reality of burnout among staff. Finding innovative digital means to maximise the capacity of each individual, and enable them to work more flexibly, is paramount to meeting the mounting system demand pressures. At the same time, staff need the right tools and support to deliver their best work, from streamlined onboarding and training to intuitive systems that “just work” without unnecessary complexity.

This award will recognise projects that are supporting both clinicians and the wider workforce with digital solutions and new ways of working to make best possible use of their skills, time and experience and increasing productivity. Particular interest will be given to initiatives co-produced directly with staff.

Eligibility

  • All NHS organisations (including providers, partnerships and systems), General Practice and primary care organisations
  • Evidence must relate to a project, ongoing or completed within the 2 years up until the award entry deadline

Ambition

  • Outline the scope of the project – what were the aims, why was a digital project required, and what strategic thinking or planning was carried out before bringing technology to the table?
  • Define the intended goals and measures of success.
  • Discuss how the risks of exclusion or exacerbating inequalities were considered in the design and development of the project, product or service, and mitigations were put in place.

Outcome

  • Discuss how either the project/product was seamlessly developed and deployed whilst retaining the existing service to minimise disruption, or if a new area, how staff were on-boarded to ensure a seamless go-live.
  • Share how the project, product or service has empowered staff to make best possible use of their skills, time and experience, and improved satisfaction.
  • Evidence performance against the success measures and targets mentioned above, including relevant clinical and operational metrics.

Value

  • Discuss how the digital product or service has improved workforce engagement and/or quality of service delivery and provide testimonials to support these claims.
  • Describe with supporting evidence any time saved or efficiency improvements of the digital project, product or service, and to what extent it can be considered value for money.
  • Share any other value generated, including unintended benefits, of the digital project.

Involvement

  • Describe and provide testimonial evidence of the working relationship between the technology partner (if relevant) and the NHS organisation that enabled a genuinely co-produced product or service.
  • Share how all relevant staff groups, and where appropriate patients, were engaged in the design and implementation of the project, product or service.
  • Judges are looking for evidence that consultative measures were taken to inform, enable and engage all staff groups, particularly those representing protected characteristics, to ensure inclusive digital development.

Spread

  • If the project was related to a specific area of the workforce, discuss the steps taken to replicate the successes across other groups within the organisation or system.
  • Describe, and, if possible, evidence how the learnings from the project or product/service development have been shared across and beyond your organisation or system.
  • Discuss the scope for further replication or scaling up of this project, product or service in other settings.
